In April 2017, The Indian Express reported that His Holiness took part in a communal harmony conference at the Kolkata Press Club alongside representatives of other faiths. The report described him as a figure whose followers included people from different religions.

Religious Guidance

His Holiness’s public life has included speaking on religious and social questions. His Holiness’s role should be understood as that of a spiritual and community figure rather than automatically describing him as a mufti or formally authorised issuer of fatwas.

His Holiness became widely known outside West Bengal in 2017 after remarks concerning singer Sonu Nigam and the use of loudspeakers for the azaan were reported across the Indian media. Contemporary reports differ in how they described the remarks, while His Holiness himself said that His Holiness had not issued a formal fatwa and described His Holiness’s statement as a personal opinion.
