Imam Hussain (A.S)

Imam Hussain (A.S) was the second son of Imam Ali (A.S) and Fatema (S.A), and a beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W), who is remembered as having said of him and his brother, “Hussain is of me, and I am of Hussain.” He grew up at the center of the earliest Muslim community in Medina and, decades later, became the figure whose stand at Karbala would come to define courage and principle for generations after him.

A Line He Would Not Cross

When the Umayyad ruler Yazid demanded his allegiance, Imam Hussain (A.S) refused to lend legitimacy to a rule he considered unjust, choosing instead to leave Medina with his family and a small band of companions.

Ashura

Surrounded near Karbala and denied access to water, Imam Hussain (A.S) and his companions were killed on the day known as Ashura. The tragedy of that day is remembered every year across the Muslim world as an emblem of sacrifice in the face of oppression.

His sister, Zainab (A.S), and his surviving son, Ali — who would become Imam Zain-ul-Abedeen (A.S) — carried the message of Karbala onward from the caravan that followed. It is through Imam Zain-ul-Abedeen that this family’s lineage continues.
