INTRODUCTION
A Rare Inheritance
Imam Muhammad Baqir (A.S) held an especially prestigious lineage — through his father, Imam Zain-ul-Abedeen (A.S), he descended from Imam Hussain (A.S), and through his mother, a daughter of Imam Hassan (A.S), he descended from Imam Hassan as well, making him a grandchild of both of the Prophet’s grandsons. As a young child, he was present at Karbala in the care of his family.

A Reputation for Learning
He earned the title al-Baqir for his skill in uncovering the deeper meaning of religious knowledge — splitting it open, in the words of the title, to reveal what lay beneath the surface.
Building the Academy
Taking advantage of a period of relative political calm, he began building the circle of teaching in Medina that his son, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (A.S), would later expand into a renowned academy attracting thousands of students.
HIS PASSING
Demise in Medina
Imam Muhammad Baqir (A.S) passed away in Medina in 114 AH, after a life spent largely in prayer and teaching, quietly watched and occasionally harassed by the ruling Umayyad governors of his time.
He was buried in the Al-Baqi Cemetery in Medina, and was succeeded by his son, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (A.S), who carried his father’s academy to its height.
